Rainwater Has to Go Somewhere
Watch where water arrives, slows, pools, and leaves before choosing a decorative fix for a drainage problem.
The best time to understand drainage is during the rain, not three sunny days later while standing beside a cart full of moisture-loving plants.
Water reveals the shape of the property. It falls from roofs, leaves paving, follows compacted routes, gathers in low places, and eventually finds somewhere else to go. A wet patch may be a planting opportunity. It may also be evidence of a problem that plants should not be asked to solve.
Water entering a structure, collecting against a foundation, crossing electrical equipment, exposing sewage, or causing significant erosion needs qualified local help. Planting is not a substitute for drainage, grading, plumbing, or structural work.
First rain
Put on shoes that can get wet and walk the property safely. Photograph downspouts, paved edges, slopes, low lawn, and any place where water changes speed or direction.
Look for the difference between water that pauses and water that stays. A shallow sheet moving across compacted soil is different from a basin that remains saturated. Note whether water is coming from your own roof and paving, from higher ground, or from an adjacent property.
Penn State Extension recommends observing a potential garden site after heavy rain to see whether water absorbs or runs off. One storm is useful evidence, not a complete diagnosis. Soil moisture and runoff change with storm intensity, season, frozen ground, and earlier weather.
Next morning
Return when the rain stops. Mark the edges of pooled areas and photograph them again. Check how close they are to buildings, paths, play areas, large trees, and property boundaries.
If the water disappeared quickly and the location is safely away from structures, the area may be able to accept more water through an appropriate planted feature. Rain gardens are designed depressions that receive runoff and allow it to soak in. They require correct siting, soil assessment, overflow planning, and plants suited to changing moisture.
They are not ornamental puddles. Penn State Extension advises planning an overflow for unusually heavy rain. University of Minnesota Extension likewise describes rain gardens as places for runoff from roofs, driveways, streets, and walks, using plants able to tolerate wet and dry periods.
After the ground should have recovered
If water remains, smells unusual, carries oily residue, exposes soil, or repeatedly makes a path unusable, stop treating the problem as a plant-selection exercise. Record how long it remains and contact the appropriate local professional or public authority.
Do not redirect water toward a neighbor, public walk, slope, or structure. Local rules can govern stormwater, grading, drainage connections, and work near utilities. Call the local utility marking service before digging.

What surface or slope carries it?
Where does it slow, pool, or soak in?
Where does overflow go during a larger storm?
Then make it beautiful
Once the water movement is understood and the location is safe, design can begin. A planted basin, permeable route, adjusted downspout, or rain barrel may become part of the garden rather than equipment hidden behind it.
Rain barrels need screened inlets, maintenance, and a deliberate overflow route away from buildings. Collected water is not drinking water. University of Minnesota Extension recommends it for ornamental plants and notes that barrels must be cleaned and prepared for freezing conditions where applicable.
Water will use the garden whether you plan for it or not. Watch first. Fix what needs fixing. Then give the necessary movement a form worth looking at.
